The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, the Honourable Jenny Lindell MP, has issued the writs for the by-elections to fill the vacant electoral seats of Albert Park District and Williamstown District.
Both by-elections will be held on Saturday 15 September 2007 and will be attendance elections.
Electoral Commissioner, Steve Tully, says that leaflets have already been distributed to every household in both electorates reminding people to update their enrolment details if they have moved, or to get on the roll if they are over 18 years of age and have never enrolled before.
“Although most people know that voting is compulsory, many people don’t realise that enrolling and keeping their enrolment details current is also compulsory. Rolls for the two by-elections will close at 8.00pm on Monday 27 August and enrolment forms must have reached us by this time in order to be able to vote in the relevant by-election.”
Potential candidates can nominate to stand for the by-elections and must have done so by close of nominations at 12 noon on Friday 31 August. The deadline for party candidates is 12 noon on Thursday 30 August.
The VEC will mail further election information to all eligible voters at least two weeks prior to election day, detailing the location of early voting and election day voting centres.
Postal vote applications for those voters who cannot make it to a voting centre are available by calling the VEC on 13 18 32.
