VEC recommends changes to ward boundaries
The Final Report of the electoral subdivision review for the Whittlesea City Council has been released. In preparation for the November 2008 local council elections, the current ward boundaries in the City of Whittlesea need to be altered so that each person’s vote has the same value. The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) recommends changes to the boundaries between North Ward and West Ward.
The Report has been sent to Mr Richard Wynne MP, Minister for Local Government. If accepted, the new ward boundaries will be in effect for the November local council elections.
“In preparing its Final Report, the VEC considered a range of information”, said Mr Steve Tully, Electoral Commissioner.
“The recommended new ward boundaries have been designed to allow the ‘one vote, one value’ principle to apply at the November local council elections,” said Mr Tully.
Under the Local Government Act 1989, the purpose of a subdivision review is to consider the location of ward boundaries so they can provide equitable representation. A subdivision review does not allow for changes to the current number of councillors, voting method or ward names.
For a copy of the Final Report visit the VEC’s website www.vec.vic.gov.au or call the VEC on 13 18 32. Copies are also available for inspection at the Council offices.
