New structure for the Shire of Melton
Three wards and seven councillors is the recommended structure for the Shire of Melton following the completion of the electoral representation review.
In the Final Report released today, the Victorian Electoral Commission recommends the Council be elected from seven councillors elected from two two-councillor wards and one three-councillor ward. This would replace the current structure of a subdivided municipality with seven councillors elected from seven single-councillor wards.
The report has been sent to Mr Richard Wynne MP, Minister for Local Government. If accepted, the new structure will be in effect for the November local council elections.
“In preparing its Final Report, the VEC considered a range of information including submissions made in response to its Preliminary Report, and statements made at a public hearing on Thursday, 24 April,” said Mr Steve Tully, Victorian Electoral Commissioner.
“We believe this structure provides the best opportunity for the interests of voters to be fairly and equitably represented on the Council," said Mr Tully.
