VEC recommends changes to ward boundaries
The final Subdivision Review Report for Mornington Peninsula Shire has been released. In preparation for the November 2008 local council elections, the current ward boundaries in Mornington Peninsula Shire need to be altered so that each person’s vote has the same value. The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) recommends changes to the boundaries bewteen Balcombe Ward, Cerberus Ward and Red Hill Ward.
The Report has been sent to Mr Richard Wynne MP, Minister for Local Government. If accepted, the new ward boundaries will be in effect for the November local council elections.
“In preparing its Final Report, the VEC considered a range of information including submissions made in response to its Preliminary Report, and statements made at a public hearing on 8 April 2008,” said Mr Steve Tully, Electoral Commissioner.
“The recommended new ward boundaries have been designed to allow the ‘one vote, one value’ principle to apply at the November local council elections,” said Mr Tully.
Under the Local Government Act 1989, the purpose of an electoral subdivision review is to consider the location of ward boundaries so they can provide equitable representation. A subdivision review does not allow for changes to the current number of councillors, voting method or ward names.
