Make sure your vote counts today

More than 80,000 Victorians are expected to vote in today’s by-elections for Albert Park and Williamstown Districts.

Electoral Commissioner, Mr Steve Tully, has urged voters to make sure their vote counts.

“Ballot papers that are not completed correctly will not be counted for any candidate,” says Mr Tully.  “That’s why it’s so important that voters take the time to read the instructions on their ballot papers.”

There are nine candidates standing for election in each by-election and voters must number all the boxes in the order of their preference for their vote to count.

Election officials can assist voters who need assistance with voting.

Voting centres are open today from 8.00am to 6.00pm.  Locations are advertised in today’s Age and Herald Sun and are listed on the Victorian Electoral Commission’s website at www.vec.vic.gov.au

Voting is compulsory for people on the electoral roll for each by-election as at Monday 27 August 2007.  Those who fail to vote risk a fine of $55.00.

Votes are being counted tonight.  Progressive results will be available at www.vec.vic.gov.au
