History of the Secret Ballot

On 19 March 1856, legislation was passed in the Victorian Parliament to introduce the Secret Ballot. This was a world first in electoral administration. The story of how this famous event occurred is a marvellous piece of history, including colourful characters, riots, intrigue, ingenuity and even a government resigning en masse!

The events of this period are worthy of use in the classroom or enjoyed as a personal taste of Victoria in the 1850s.
