Ways to vote at State elections

At a voting centre

You can vote at a State election by going to a voting centre on election day. Most people vote at voting centres.

Voting centres are open from 8.00 a.m. until 6.00 p.m. on election day. The locations of voting centres are advertised at the time of an election. You will also be able to find the locations of voting centres on this website.

When you arrive at the voting centre, an election official will ask for your name and address. The election official will then:
  • confirm your electoral district and region;
  • mark your name on the electoral roll to indicate that you've voted; and
  • issue you with two differently coloured ballot papers for you to complete - one for your Legislative Assembly (Lower House) district and one for your Legislative Council (Upper House) region.

What if I can't get to a voting centre on election day?

Early and postal voting services are available for people who believe they will have difficulty getting to a voting centre on election day.

Early voting: You can vote before election day by visiting an early voting centre. The locations will be advertised at the time of an election, and listed on this website.

Voting by post: If you cannot vote in person, you can apply for a postal vote. Applications will be available from the VEC and from post offices closer to election day.

Alternatively, you can register as a general postal voter if you:
  • are aged 70 years or older;
  • are seriously ill or infirm;
  • are caring for someone who is seriously ill or infirm;
  • cannot vote on a Saturday for religious reasons;
  • live 20 km or more from a voting centre;
  • are a silent elector; or
  • are serving a prison sentence of less than five years.

The VEC mails postal voting material to general postal voters automatically for every election.
