Aboriginal community outreach wrap

By Georgia Cromarty, VEC Aboriginal Inclusion Officer

Over the last few months, Aboriginal Democracy Ambassador Ben Lucas and I have been busy running outreach sessions in the Aboriginal community across Victoria. Some of the events we have attended include the Richmond Football Club’s Korin Gamadji Institute, Djirra’s Sisters Day Out and Reconciliation Victoria’s Tour on Wadawurrung Country.

Victorian Reconciliation Action Groups met for a tour of Wadawurrung Country, led by a Wadawurrung Traditional Owner. The weekend began with a smoking ceremony to welcome the group to Country.

In the lead up to the elections for the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria, I have attended Victorian Treaty Advancement Commission (VTAC) panels across the State, met with VTAC’s election services provider, and provided advice to VTAC’s policy team based on my experiences in Aboriginal outreach and the 2018 State election.

I have also proudly cast my vote in the first step towards a Treaty in this nation’s history. Voting in the Assembly election is now open and closes on 20 October. Through this process, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities will elect a body that will negotiate the framework for treaty or treaties between the Victorian Government and Aboriginal nations across the State.

On the horizon is the VEC’s new Aboriginal Action Plan, a successor to our Reconciliation Action Plan, which expires at the end of 2019. The Action Plan will be co-designed with the Victorian Aboriginal community in line with the Victorian Government’s self-determination principles laid out in the Victorian Aboriginal Affairs Framework. The Action Plan will inform how we engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities over the coming years. It will also direct our outreach work for the 2020 local council elections.

We can come to Aboriginal Communities all around the State to hold information sessions on enrolling, voting and elections in Victoria. If you'd like to book a session, contact us at education@vec.vic.gov.au
