Registration for new political parties closing in July

Electoral Commissioner Warwick Gately is encouraging anyone who wishes to register a political party ahead of the 2022 State election to submit their application by Friday 29 July.

'Applications to register a political party cannot be made within 120 days of a State election and any applications in progress at 6 pm on Tuesday 1 November, will be suspended until after the election,' Mr Gately said.

To register a party, you must make an application in writing. It needs to include:

  • the name and address of the proposed registered officer
  • a copy of the party's constitution
  • a statutory declaration about the number of eligible members
  • a list of the names and addresses of at least 500 members
  • an application fee of $751.50 as at 1 July 2021 (50 fee units).

Once received, the VEC will check the list of members to verify membership and advertise the application to ensure there are no objections. This process can take up to 4 months.

An unregistered party can still participate at an election, but will not be able to:

  • have their name and logo next to their candidate's name or group on the ballot papers
  • submit nominations of candidates or how-to-vote cards in bulk with the VEC
  • access enrolment information for permitted purposes.
