Declarations commenced today for districts

Results for 35 Lower House seats in the Victorian State election are now finalised, with Election Managers formally declaring 35 candidates elected today.

These are districts where the candidate has won with an absolute majority, with more than 50 per cent of first preference votes.

Before declaring the result, the VEC ensures that the number of outstanding ballot papers could not possibly affect the result of the election. Further declarations will continue on Monday.

Monday 8 December is the last day that declaration votes (mainly postal votes coming from overseas) can be admitted to the count.

Formal preference distributions in all districts where no candidate has an absolute majority will take place on Monday and Tuesday.

Counting of first preference votes has almost been finalised for the three closest Legislative Assembly districts. The margins indicated are based on two candidate preferred results as at 6.00 pm:

  • Bentleigh (ALP currently in the lead by 387 votes)
  • Frankston (ALP currently in the lead by 337 votes)
  • Prahran (Liberal Party currently in the lead by 60 votes)

Regarding the Upper House results, the region recheck centres will continue to recheck votes over the weekend, completing the count of votes cast at voting centres and moving onto early, absent and postal votes.

Data entry of rechecked below-the-line votes will start tomorrow at Etihad Stadium, and is anticipating to continue until 16 December.
