Almost 90,000 to head for polls in Polwarth and South-West Coast

Just under 90,000 people from Victoria’s south west are enrolled to vote in two upcoming by-elections after the rolls closed for Polwarth and South-West Coast districts last night.

43,856 electors in Polwarth District and 45,331 in South-West Coast District were recorded at the close of rolls, 8.00 pm Thursday 24 September. This is an increase of 579 and 565 electors respectively since the 2014 State election.

Early voting commences Monday 5 October and will be available to electors unable to vote on election day, Saturday 31 October.

To vote early, electors will have to declare that they are unable to attend a voting centre on election day during voting hours.

Early voting centres will be open between 8.30 am and 6.00 pm, Monday to Friday, until Friday 30 October, with the following extended hours:

  • Saturday 24 October, 9.00 am to 2.00 pm
  • Thursday 29 October, 8.30 am to 8.00 pm.

The following shared early voting centres will be available to electors voting in either of the by-elections:

Those unable to vote early or on election day can apply for a postal vote. Postal vote applications are available:

  • online at vec.vic.gov.au
  • at any post office within Polwarth District and South-West Coast District
  • at the election offices:
    • Polwarth District Election Office
      310–312 Murray Street, Colac.
    • South-West Coast District Election Office
      171A Liebig Street, Warrnambool.
  • at the Colac and Warrnambool Australian Electoral Commission offices
  • by calling 131 832.

Applications for postal votes must be received by 6.00 pm on Thursday 29 October and completed ballot papers must be in the mail or handed to a voting centre manager before 6.00 pm on election day, Saturday 31 October.

Voting is compulsory for all electors enrolled in Polwarth District and South-West Coast District.

Notes to editors:

  • There were 43,277 Victorians on the State electoral roll for Polwarth District at the 2014 State election.
  • There were 44,766 Victorians on the State electoral roll for South-West Coast District at the 2014 State election.
  • In 2015 in Polwarth there are 432 more female electors and in South-West Coast there are just under 1,500 more female electors.
  • Nominations close at 12 noon on Thursday 1 October for party endorsed candidates and close at 12 noon on Friday 2 October for independent candidates.
