Vacancy within Wangaratta Rural City Council

An extraordinary vacancy has occurred in City Ward within Wangaratta Rural City Council due to the passing of Councillor Ruth Amery.

The vacancy will be filled through a countback of the vacating councillor’s votes from the 2016 Wangaratta Rural City Council election.

Under Victoria’s Local Government Act, a vacancy in a multi-councillor ward is filled by a countback of votes from the previous general election (instead of the voters voting in a by-election).

‘These votes will be distributed to the six unsuccessful candidates in last year’s election, according to voters’ preferences. The candidate who gains more than 50% of the countback votes will be elected,’ Returning Officer Charmaine Morel said.

The countback will take place in the Council Chamber, corner of Ovens and Ford Streets, Wangaratta, at 1.00 pm on Monday 13 November.

Interested parties may attend and observe the countback.

The result will be published online at vec.vic.gov.au and also in local newspapers following the countback.
