Countback to fill vacancy in Moreland City Council

A countback procedure to fill an extraordinary vacancy for South Ward within Moreland City Council will take place at 5.00 pm on Wednesday 22 November, following the resignation of Councillor Samantha Ratnam.

The countback will take place in the Council Chamber, Coburg Civic Centre, 90 Bell Street, Coburg.

The vacancy is in a multi-councillor electorate, and will be filled by a countback of the vacating councillor’s votes from the 2016 Moreland City Council election (instead of voters voting in a by-election).

‘These votes will be distributed to the unsuccessful candidates in last year’s election, according to voters’ preferences. The candidate who gains more than 50% of the countback votes will be elected,’ Returning Officer Charmaine Morel said.

Interested parties may attend and observe the countback.

Results will be published online at and also in local newspapers.
