Countback to fill councillor vacancy in Melbourne City Council

A countback procedure to fill an extraordinary vacancy within Melbourne City Council will take place at 11.00 am on Monday 15 January 2018, following the resignation of Councillor Tessa Sullivan.

The countback will take place at the Victorian Electoral Commission, Level 11, 530 Collins Street, Melbourne.

The vacancy will be filled by a countback of the vacating councillor’s votes from the 2016 Melbourne City Council election of councillors (instead of voters voting in a by-election).

‘The vacating councillor’s votes will be distributed to the remaining eligible unsuccessful candidates from last year’s election, according to voters’ preferences. The candidate who gains more than 50% of the countback votes will be elected,’ Returning Officer Glenda Frazer said.

Interested parties may attend and observe the countback.

The result will be published online at vec.vic.gov.au and also in local newspapers.
