Countback to fill vacancy in Wellington Shire Council

A countback procedure to fill an extraordinary vacancy in Northern Ward within Wellington Shire Council will take place at 1.00 pm on Wednesday 15 November, following the resignation of Councillor Keith Mills.

The countback will take place in the Merrimans Creek Room, Wellington Shire Council Desailly Street Headquarters, 16-18 Desailly Street, Sale.

The vacancy is in a multi-councillor ward, and will be filled by a countback of the vacating councillor’s votes from the 2016 Wellington Shire Council election (instead of voters voting in a by-election).

‘These votes will be distributed to the unsuccessful candidates in last year’s election, according to voters’ preferences. The candidate who gains more than 50% of the countback votes will be elected,’ Returning Officer Katrina Collins said.

Interested parties may attend and observe the countback.

The result will be published online at and also in local newspapers.
