Northern Grampians Shire Council, South West Ward by-election

Voters in South West Ward in Northern Grampians Shire Council will vote in a postal by-election this November.

As there were no candidates at the close of nominations for South West Ward at the 2020 Northern Grampians General elections, a by-election is required to fill the vacancy.

Voting

Voting in the South West Ward by-election this November will be by post.

We will post ballot packs to enrolled voters from Tuesday 10 November to Thursday 12 November.

The ballot pack will contain:

  • a ballot paper attached to statements and photographs lodged by the candidates in your council or ward
  • a ballot paper envelope with a flap
  • voting instructions
  • a reply-paid envelope.

Completing and returning your vote

Follow the instructions on the ballot pack and make sure your completed vote is in the mail or hand-delivered to the Election Office before 6 pm on Friday 27 November.

Local mail clearance times vary. Check your local mail clearance times so your vote is in the mail on time.

Who must vote?

You must vote if you are a State-enrolled voter as at 4 pm on Friday 28 August.

If you do not vote, you may be fined.

If you will be away or have changed address

You will be able to apply to have your ballot pack sent to a different address if:

  • you will be away when ballot packs are mailed (after Tuesday 10 November)
    or
  • your mailing address has changed since the close of rolls (Friday 28 August).
Details on how to request a replacement ballot pack will be available on this website from Tuesday 10 November. 

Council-enrolled voters

If you are a council-enrolled voter, we encourage you to vote, but you won’t be fined if you don’t. Find out more about council-enrolled voters.

If you own more than one property in the ward

You will get one vote for this by-election.

If you are a State-enrolled voter, you must vote for your enrolled address only.

If you are a council-enrolled voter for more than one address in the ward, you will get one ballot pack only. Contact your council if you have any questions.

Enrolment

You are already enrolled for this by-election if you were on the roll by 4 pm on Friday 28 August.

There are two types of enrolment: State-enrolled and council-enrolled.

State enrolled voters

State-enrolled voters are Australian citizens (or qualified British subjects) who are 18 years or older, have lived in Victoria for at least one month and have enrolled.

Council-enrolled voters include other people, such as ratepayers (including non-Australian citizens) who:

  • qualify to be automatically enrolled for this election 
    or
  • have applied to council to be enrolled.

My address has changed

If you moved into South West Ward after the close of roll 4 pm on Friday 28 August, you may not be able to vote in this by-election.

If you moved within or out of South West Ward after the close of roll, you will receive a ballot pack at your last enrolled (old) address.

You must vote for that address or risk a fine.
