What gets counted on election night?

      • Counting starts at 6 pm on election day, after voting centres close.
      • All ordinary votes will be counted tonight.
      • We will also begin counting Lower House early votes and postal votes.

Will there be a result tonight?

First preference votes counted tonight may provide an indication of the election if a candidate receives more than 50% of the enrolled votes. However, around half of the district results will likely involve a preference distribution after a full recheck of all votes.

This process takes some days, and a final official result (known as a declaration) will not be available for up to a week or more.
