General postal voters
A general postal voter is someone who has registered to automatically get their ballot papers in the mail for an election. There are different eligibility rules for council, state and federal elections. This is because there is different legislation.
You may be eligible due to a range of factors like your age, health, where you live, or if you're currently in prison.
Who can register
You can apply to become a general postal voter for:
- all elections (including federal) if you meet the general criteria on the AEC website, or
- Victorian elections (council and state) if you are enrolled to vote in Victoria and are over 70.
How to apply
The AEC manages all general postal voter applications on our behalf.
To opt in, go to their website and select Vic as your state or territory. Then:
- choose one of the general options to register for all elections (including federal), or
- choose a Victoria-specific option to only register for Victorian elections (state and council).
2026 state election
You have until 8 pm on Tuesday 3 November to apply to be a general postal voter for the 2026 state election.
