Pay, training and conditions

This page explains how election staff are paid, what allowances apply, and what to do if your circumstances change. For your role's specific rates, see ‘Rates of pay’ below.

Pay rates and entitlements

The same pay structure applies to both election casuals and election officials. Every role attracts:

  • casual loading
  • overtime rates
  • night work penalty rates.

Each role's specific rate is listed under 'Rates of pay'.

Casual loading

Your hourly rate includes a 25% casual loading. This is paid in place of paid leave and other entitlements that permanent staff receive.

Overtime

Overtime type When it applies Rate
Time and a half Hours worked Monday to Friday over 8 hours in a day, or over 38 hours in a week 1.5 times the base hourly rate
Double time All hours worked on Sundays and public holidays 2 times the base hourly rate

The 25% casual loading does not apply to overtime hours.

Overtime does not apply on Saturdays unless you have already worked more than 38 hours that week.

Night work penalty

If you work between 8 pm and 6 am, a penalty rate applies to those hours.

Penalty type Hours Rate
Night work 8 pm to 6 am 1.15 times the base hourly rate

A few things to know about how night work interacts with other rates:

  • If your shift covers both day and night hours, the night rate applies only to the hours between 8 pm and 6 am.
  • The night work rate is paid on top of the 25% casual loading.
  • If overtime applies to those hours, the overtime rate replaces the night work rate.

Election official packages

If you're appointed as an election official, your package covers:

  • anticipated ordinary and overtime hours on election day
  • required training (online modules, face-to-face sessions and assigned reading)
  • any preparatory work before election day
  • relevant allowances (such as travel or phone allowances, if applicable).

Casual loading, overtime and penalty rates are already built into the package.

When and how you're paid

We pay all election staff by electronic funds transfer (EFT). This is a digital transfer to your nominated bank account.

Election casuals are paid fortnightly (every 2 weeks).

Election officials working in a voting centre on election day are paid at the end of the next fortnightly pay cycle after the election. For the 2026 state election, pay day for election officials is 9 or 10 December 2026.

Keep your details up to date

You must keep your details current in the election staff self-service portal. This includes your:

  • contact details
  • postal address
  • bank account details
  • tax file number
  • superannuation information.

Incomplete or incorrect banking details will delay your payment.
