Education and outreach
Informed citizens actively participating in free and fair elections is vital to any healthy, functioning democracy. Providing accessible electoral information and education services is a fundamental part of maximising electoral participation across the community.
Democracy Ambassador program
The VEC’s education and outreach work expanded in the lead up to the State election through the Democracy Ambassador (DA) program. The program employed 47 community members to deliver face to face voter education sessions to people with disabilities, people experiencing homelessness, Indigenous communities, and culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
Together they speak 29 languages and dialects: Arabic, Bangla, Bengali, Bhutanese, Cantonese, Dari, Dinka, Farsi, French, Greek, Guajarati, Hindi, Indonesian (basic), Kiswahili (Swahili), Hazaraghi, Malayalam, Malay, Mandarin, Marathi, Nepal, Pashto, Persian, Samoan, Serer, Taishanese, Tigrinya, Urdu, Wolof and Yoruba.
These outreach programs delivered 520 sessions to 21,870 participants over the 2018-19 year.
