Looking ahead to LG2020

The VEC is excited about delivering Victoria’s next major electoral event, with preparations for the October 2020 local government elections already well advanced. These elections are complex and far-reaching, with up to 4.5 million voters eligible to cast a vote.

Over 2,000 candidates are expected to contest some 650 vacancies in a mix of council electoral structures. Under existing laws, councils can choose to conduct their elections by post or by attendance voting (voting in person).

The VEC has published its election service plan, and you can download it from the local council election reports page.

Before the end of the year Parliament is expected to consider a Bill to reform the Local Government Act 1989. The proposed reforms may impact the electoral structures of local councils and components of election delivery. The VEC will be ready to respond.
