2024 local council elections

A graphic promoting the 2024 local council elections in Victoria, Australia. The text reads 'My council, my vote' and encourages voting by post. To prepare for the 78 local council general elections in October 2024, we focused on workforce sustainability, shared services, and field operations.

During the 2023–24 financial year, we made several improvements to election processes, including:

  • centralising telephone enquiries and the replacement vote process
  • implementing enhanced fraud detection measures.

We also delivered a targeted communications plan to help councils understand changes to:

  • enrolment entitlements for council-enrolled voters under the Local Government Act 2020 (Vic)
  • election timelines, including an earlier close of the roll, under the Local Government Regulations 2020 (Vic).

To further support councils, we held regular information sessions, webinars, and face-to-face meetings across Victoria.

Other electoral events

During 2023–24, we conducted 18 electoral events, including:

  • 2 state by-elections
  • 2 local council by-elections
  • 2 fee-for-service elections
  • 14 countbacks to fill extraordinary vacancies.

Strathbogie Shire Council had two pending extraordinary vacancies that were not filled due to the suspension of the council from Wednesday 6 December 2023.

All by-elections and countbacks were completed within budget and met legislative requirements.
